My October Meal Plan

Cozy, Nourishing, and Family-Approved: Our October Meal Plan

Fall is officially here, and as the weather cools down, there is nothing better than gathering the family around a table filled with warm, comforting, and deeply nourishing food. This month, we are diving into a meal plan that balances cozy comfort with optimal nutrition to keep everyone's energy levels high and metabolisms humming.

My kitchen philosophy is heavily inspired by Celtic ancestral eating, Kate Deering’s game-changing book, How to Heal Your Metabolism and lots of nods to what I grew up eating from my mom’s home cooking. Instead of stressing over complicated, endless ingredient lists, we rely on a cultivated core set of nutrient-dense staples. Think rich varieties of beef, fresh fish, high-quality dairy, and easily digestible carbohydrates like potatoes and squash. Everything is gluten-free (though I don’t think you would have noticed if I wouldn’t have mentioned it), family-friendly, and designed to support a thriving, happy metabolism.

Grab a warm drink, and let’s look at what is on the menu for October.

The Fuel-Your-Fire Breakfast Lineup

We always kick off our mornings with a focus on high-quality proteins and bioavailable energy to jumpstart the day. While these aren't locked into specific calendar days, here are the staple options we rotate through all month long:

  • Cottage Cheese Omelettes: A family favorite, we take some whole eggs, whites and whisk in a little milk for the base and for the filling use a little cheese and cottage cheese.

  • Metabolism-Boosting Smoothies: Blended with frozen berries, Greek yogurt, and a few favorites for a delicious and nutrition packed stable.

  • Protein Pancakes: Made gluten-free with rolled oats (or banana), eggs, and cottage cheese, served with a drizzle of real maple syrup.

  • Oat Bowls: Using gluten free, sprouted rolled oats, topped with stevia sweetened Greek yogurt and fruit topping (My current favorite is our Honey Fig Jam!).

Simple, Satisfying Midday Lunches

Not much changes here. Lunch in our house is all about simplicity, utilizing our core pantry staples and intentional leftovers to keep things stress-free.

  • Tuna Boats & Milton's Crackers: Nutrient-dense canned tuna or salmon served inside crisp romaine lettuce boats or with a side of gluten-free crackers like Milton’s. I use ¼ cup of cottage cheese per can and some mustard and a little salt and pepper, Sometimes I incorporate some sardines as well for the nutrition.

  • Lunch Taco Bowls: Quick seasoned ground beef over salad greens with fresh avocado, cilantro, and fresh lime or served with chips

  • Leftover Remixes: If we are bursting at the seems with dinner leftovers then we eat these for lunch as long as it isn’t going to rob us of dinner.

  • Bulk-Prep Boiled Eggs: My kids love egg salad. I use a little mayo mustard and salt and pepper or cottage cheese if I’m keeping things lighter.

  • Quick Grab Snacks: For the afternoon slump, we keep the pantry stocked with Nori sheets (We like the Gimme brand), Chomps meat sticks, RX bars, and seasonal apples or pears. I do make some fun baked treats here and there as well. Like Oat Banana Muffins.

October Dinners At-A-Glance

Our dinner plan operates on a 4-week rotation. It embraces the beauty of "cook once, eat twice" with built-in leftover nights so you aren't spending every evening at the stove. Much of the time its made up of components also so that we can each modify how much of what we want in regards to macro breakdowns as well. The kids tend to need more carb and fat than I do for example for may opt for more mashed potatoes!

The Master Grocery Strategy

The secret to making this meal plan seamless is our Master Core Grocery List. By sticking to high-quality ancestral basics, shopping becomes completely predictable. We load up our cart with top-tier proteins like grass-fed ground beef, wild-caught white fish, and shrimp. We pair those with metabolism-supporting dairy like cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, and real butter. For carbs, we stick to easily digestible root veggies like russet and sweet potatoes, carrots, and winter squash.

When you focus on nourishing the body with real, whole foods that your ancestors would recognize, meal planning stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like a celebration of health.
