Autumn Four Week Rotating Meal Plan

My approach to meal planning has evolved a lot over the years. When I was single, I had no problem cooking a big batch of one meal—usually a sheet pan of chicken and vegetables—and eating it all week. Working heavy overtime as a nurse, I didn't mind my meals being a little robotic.

After I got married and had kids, I had to introduce more variety. For a while, my husband and I experimented with "fitness-style" cooking, like swapping protein powder into baked goods to hit ideal macro goals. But as the kids grew, I found myself drawing on my roots to make simpler, family-friendly meals.

Balancing everyone's needs while learning to parent on the job wasn't easy. I often tried new "healthy recipes" that I loved, only for the kids to reject them, leaving me making a second dinner just so they would eat. On the flip side, the meals the kids preferred weren’t ideal for keeping my own health and weight in check. It wasn't junk food; it's just that growing kids have very different nutritional needs than an adult woman.

After years of decision fatigue and sheer exhaustion over the "what’s for dinner?" question, I finally found our balance. I created a four-week rotating menu with small seasonal adjustments. The relief of eliminating that daily guesswork has been fantastic. Even better, I'm able to feed my family nutritious food without compromising my own health goals.

Today, our meals are built around the simple, classic dishes I grew up with. My grocery list is highly curated and consistent, meaning I avoid one-off ingredients that just go bad and waste money. I mostly rely on a "cook once, eat twice" approach alongside component cooking, which allows everyone to build a plate that suits their needs. For example, if we have tacos, I prep plenty of greens to make a taco salad for myself, while the rest of the family uses tortillas or chips. Everyone is happy that way—well, most of the time, anyway!

I like to shop for the majority of this as a one month stock up then take a few minutes each week to look and see what may need refreshed. I look at the upcoming dinners for the week as well as all of the breakfasts, lunches and snack things my family likes and do a quick grocery run to replenish. I am a Costco shopper so that big shop will be there and then I fill in with smaller things at a close by grocer or sometimes go back to Costo for a quicker run through depending on the needs. Almost everything I need I can get at Costco but things like cabbage, cilantro and stevia are not available at our local Costco so I end up a another grocer for these items.

I did not put quantities on the grocery printable because I don’t know how big your family is or if you are double batching the recipes. The beauty is that because you are reusing most of these items and a majority are shelf stable or freezable, things shouldn’t go to waste very easily as the rotation comes around again.

I like to print out the Four Week at a Glance sheet and the entire Grocery List and place them into a protective sheet or Xerox them together so I can use a dry erase to marker make any changes if needed and use it over and over. I like this physical copy to glance at as I type in my weekly needs to the notes on my phone. I also place it onto the fridge so that whenever someone is asking “whats for dinner?” They can take a look.

This may not be everyone’s style or approach but it sure has helped me. I hope you are enjoying the wrap up of summer as autumn is setting in!
